The Society was first formed in 1936 and has the aim of developing and promoting mutual understanding between the medical and legal professions in the Greater Manchester area. The Society hosts discussions, debates, and meetings of interest to the professions and pre-pandemic also arranged social events to enable relaxed interactions.
Membership of the Society is open to medical, dental, and legal professionals living or practising or who have practised within 50 miles of the Manchester area.
As well as established professionals the Society encourages young graduates of both professional fields to attend events and join the Society. In addition, undergraduates and trainees in the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Law of all the Greater Manchester universities are encouraged to attend events and become members of the Society. Trainee solicitors who may be undertaking a non-degree based 5-year training contract are also eligible to join as members.
Membership is welcome from the newest trainees/students through to retired professionals and currently includes GP’s, hospital consultants, forensic pathologists, ‘junior’ hospital doctors and medical academics as a well barristers, solicitors, judges, and legal academics. The MDMLS Council may also admit members of other professions and other interested persons on a discretionary basis.
